The Children’s Cottage Society (CCS) is seeking candidates who are interested in joining our Board to help contribute to the continued growth and development of an inclusive and community focused organization.
CCS has a 34-year history of operations in Calgary specializing in prevention and intervention work in providing shelter and supportive programs for more than 70,000 children and families experiencing trauma, crisis, and homelessness. We’ve recently opened a large new Centre that will help thousands of children and families in the area as we continue to serve our community.

In the past financial year, we’ve supported more than 3,000 individuals and 1,500 families through our programs, with services delivered by 130 staff members and 330 volunteers.
CCS has excellent philanthropic support with more than 25% of annual operations ($6.8 million) being funded through donations ($1.7 million). Current revenue streams are as follows.
• Government of Alberta (Children’s Services)
• Donations, fundraising and grants
• Calgary Homeless Foundation
• Brenda Strafford Foundation
• Additional: United Way, Calgary Foundation, FCSS (City of Calgary) and investment income
We are seeking Board members who have previous experience on not-for-profit boards, in a senior role with a non-profit organization, and/or with Board governance experience. At this time, we are particularly interested in prospective Board members who have expertise in one of the following areas:
Senior level finance/commercial experience, and/or a finance or accounting designation.
Indigenous cultural knowledge and experience
Experience with government relations
Research (University Affiliation)
Family Services
Human Resources
All Board roles are volunteer. The Board meets 9 times per year (plus AGM and Board Strategic Planning Day) and is encouraged to participate in other CCS related events. Committees meet 9-10 times per year.
Board Duties
• Primary duties focus on strategic planning, financial oversight, and policy development
• Key responsibilities include: prepare for and attend all Board meetings, participate in Board discussions, support management through expertise and advice, at the request of the CEO or Board Chair attend events and/or meetings on behalf of the Board, support CCS through fundraising activities, participation in events, act as an ambassador on CCS’ mission, vision, and values.
• Board members attend nine (9) Board meetings per year – usually on the late afternoon or evening – and provide sound, objective judgement, and strategic input into governance relevant to executing the organization’s mission, policies, and programs
• Board members commit to an initial term of three (3) years, with possibility to renew for up to three (3) additional terms.
• Board members participate on at least one Board committee
• Board members champion The Children’s Cottage in the community to develop better awareness and support for the organization, and participate in/support fundraising initiatives
