When Ayana knocked on the door of the Children's Cottage Crisis Nursery, she didn't know what to expect. A year and a half later, she is feeling
hopeful and knows she always has somewhere to turn to in tough times. Donate today to support families like Ayana's.
My name is Ayana, and I am the mother of two small boys. Please allow me to share my story and tell you how you can create hope for others.
When I knocked on the door of the Crisis Nursery in the summer of 2020, I was feeling completely alone. I had recently separated from my abusive husband, and I was scared for my life.
I’d seen children playing at the nursery from my home and thought maybe I could get some help for my children. When I arrived on the nursery doorstep, I was invited inside for a talk. I learned that the Children’s Cottage is so much more than a child care centre.
I cried when I told my story, because until then I had nobody to talk to.
The Children’s Cottage matched me with a family coach, and for the first time in a long time, I felt like someone understood what I was going through. I didn’t have anyone in Calgary I could turn to during a crisis. My coach asked me about my goals, and together we worked on an application for Calgary Housing.
also knew that I could count on the crisis nursery to care for my children if I was facing an emergency.
I was worried about my oldest son, so my family coach helped me get him some developmental testing. As a result, he was diagnosed with autism. Early diagnosis and intervention are really important with autism, so we quickly applied for funding to get him the support he needs.
A year and a half on, I am in a comfortable home with my two little boys, and I know who to turn to in times of crisis.
The Crisis Nursery and Children’s Cottage Society were there for me when I was desperate and helped me in ways I didn’t even know I needed. I am so relieved with everything that the Children’s Cottage Society has done for me, and that I am getting the help that I need. I have hope.
