The Children’s Cottage Society, established in Calgary in 1986, provides crisis nursery, community respite, and family support programs to more than 3,500 children a year. The Society’s mission is to “Build strong children and safe, nurturing families through prevention programs and support services” and our vision is “Resilient children blossom in healthy families.”
Brenda’s House is a shelter program for homeless families that enables transition into housing using a “housing first” model of service. Brenda’s House has been in operation since February 2009 and provides shelter and support services to 14 families at a time.
The Brenda’s House On Call Stand-By position exists to ensure that there is always someone available to fill in for staff who call in sick or are otherwise unable to come in for their shift or complete their shift. Stand-By employees will be compensated through a weekly stipend of $300 and then paid hourly for nay shifts they cover. Staff will be part of a regular rotation where for up to one week they will guarantee their availability to come in and cover shifts as needed.
Flexibility on the number of days within a week will be considered and the stipend will be adjusted accordingly. The weekly stipend is guaranteed regardless of whether or not ca call is received.
Shifts needing to be covered will be as follows: Weeknights between the hours of 9:00pm to 7:00am; and Saturday and Sunday 24 hour availability
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completed High School Education
- At least one year completed towards a Diploma or Degree in a human services field
- Experiencing working in a residential setting, homeless families, or families with complex needs is an asset
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR level C certification
- Current Suicide Intervention training certification
- Brain Story Certification Course (online training)
- Indigenous Awareness Teachings
- Diversity Training
- Harm Reduction and Naloxone Training
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word, Teams, and Outlook
- Basic skills in Microsoft Excel
- Proficient computer skills
- Experience using HMIS, ETO, or a similar client database is an asset
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- While on Stand-By
- Sign up to cover a week (or partial week if necessary)
- Provide accurate contact information and be available to answer phone calls immediately
- Ensure availability to respond and arrive for a shift within 30 minutes
- While on Shift
- Maintain a secure and safe environment for all families staying at Brenda’s House
- Ensure policies and procedures of the Children’s Cottage Society and Brenda’s House are being maintained
- Provide families support throughout the night including:
- Read Key Worker notes on families to be familiar with needs should a family need support
- Provide non-judgmental support to families
- Provide childcare respite when needed
- Role model positive interactions and conflict resolution
- Follow emergency protocols
- Respond to calls from families experiencing homelessness or imminent loss of housing, offering supportive and non-judgemental assistance, and information regarding shelter access and community resources
- Assis in the daily routines to ensure a safe, clean, healthy environment, including:
- Floor checks
- Assigned cleaning duties
- Assisting in kitchen duties
- Provide crisis intervention as needed
- Interact with children; support with child supervision as required
- Record keeping
- Documenting relevant interactions with parents and children
- Document data for evaluation purposes
- Input data into ETO database
- Complete nightly reports
- Participate in shift work schedule
- Other responsibilities as required
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
- A Police Information Check, which includes a vulnerable sector search, is required prior to employment.
- A Child Intervention Record Check is required upon commencement of employment.
- Proof of Educational requirements must be presented in original form prior to job offer.
