The Children’s Cottage Society, established in Calgary in 1986, provides crisis nursery, community respite, and family support programs to more than 3,500 children a year. The Society’s mission is to “Build strong children and safe, nurturing families through prevention programs and support services” and our vision is “Resilient children blossom in healthy families.”

The Crisis Nursery provides 24 hour care for three day periods for up to 14 children under the age of eight when their families are in crisis and have no other alternatives for childcare help.

The Child Support Worker is responsible for day-to-day care and planning of activities according to the developmental needs of the children staying at the Crisis Nursery. They will interact with the parents daily by phone, and when Family Support is not available will complete admissions and discharges with the parents. This role ensures that files are completed, and data has been entered on the database.

Location of work is 1804 Home Road NW (Effective April, 2024)

HOURS/WAGE: This position is a combination of 12 hour day shifts and 12 hour awake night shifts. The Hourly Wage is $24.00

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Minimum Requirement: Diploma in the Human Service field from an accredited institution 
  • Minimum of one year experience working with children and their families. 
  • Current first aid/CPR/suicide intervention, aboriginal training, diversity training. 
  • Knowledge base in solution focused conversation, community resources, skills in crisis intervention and basic problem solving. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proficient use of computers including ability to document using a database. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Interacting with Children 
  • Providing quality care for each child. 
  • Maintaining a safe environment 
  • Assisting children in their daily routines keeping in mind the child’s developmental stage. 
  • Assisting children to cope with feelings of separation from parents. 
  • Interacting with parents: 
  • Taking crisis nursery calls, offering non-judgemental assistance to all families pursuing help from the Children’s Cottage. 
  • Interviewing parents upon arrival in an empathetic and supportive manner when family support workers are not available. 
  • Record keeping and data entry. 
  • Overseeing and assisting childcare volunteers as they provide care for children. 

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: 

  • A Police Information Check, which includes a vulnerable sector search, is required prior to employment 
  • A Child Intervention Record Check is required upon commencement of employment 
  • Proof of Educational requirements must be presented in original form prior to job offer.
