Family Support Worker – Part-Time (.5 FTE): Crisis Nursery

The Children’s Cottage Society, established in Calgary in 1986, provides crisis nursery, community respite, and family support programs to more than 3,500 children a year. The Society’s mission is to “Build strong children and safe, nurturing families through prevention programs and support services” and our vision is “Resilient children blossom in healthy families.” 

The Crisis Nursery provides 24-hour care for three day periods for up to 20 children under the age of eight when their families are in crisis and have no other alternatives for childcare help. 

The Intake Family Support Worker plays a central role in facilitating family access to this program and community respite support and helps to ensure that parents receive the help they need during times of crisis.

HOURS/LOCATION

This position consists of an evening shift Monday to Friday: 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm. Location of work is at our Child and Family Centre  1804 Home Road NW

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Take crisis calls from parents and process respite care requests; offer supportive and non- judgmental assistance to all families.
  • Over the phone, interview caregivers in an empathic and supportive manner to assess:
  • need for service and current crisis information
  • family’s strengths and risk factors present
  • children’s health, socialization, development, and special needs
  • community and family supports available
  • parent’s ability to cope with the crisis, and priority of need
  • Processing requests and coordinating placements for the Volunteer Daycare Program.
  • Completing admissions and discharges with families, providing supportive, educational interventions to promote family growth and change using brief solution-focused strategies, crisis intervention skills, motivational interviewing and family goal setting.
  • Complete pre and post-evaluation forms with parents for the Volunteer Daycare Program.
  • Guide and support the work of volunteers assisting in the Intake office.
  • Share Intake information and liaise between Intake and the relevant Program Managers and staff teams for the Crisis Nursery, Family Outreach, and Community Respite.
  • Input data into ETO database and other tracking systems

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma in a Human Services related field – Degree preferred.
  • Minimum two years related experience.
  • Self-directed, organized and able to multitask well
  • Strong communication and client interview skills
  • Experience with family crisis support and brief solution-focused approach
  • Experience with using an electronic client database – knowledge of ETO is an asset

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • A Police Information Check at commencement and every three years, which includes a vulnerable sector search, is a requirement to maintain employment 
  • A Child Intervention Record Check at commencement and every three years, which includes a vulnerable sector search, is a requirement to maintain employment
  • Proof of Education (original Documents) required as part of commencement.
