The 160-foot-tall crane will be in place for the next few months as work on the new centre begins. The contest is open to all children 18 years and under, with a chance to win a $350 prize package. The contest is live online, https://childrenscottage.ab.ca/news/2022/08/04/contests/name-the-crane-contest. Once the names have been submitted, CCS employees will select their top five favourite names, which will then be voted on by the public to select the ultimate winner. The winning entry will be unveiled on October 4th, 2022, at the construction site.

Lisa Garrisen, spokesperson for the Children’s Cottage, stated, “We wanted to have some fun when building the new centre, and what could be more fun than naming a crane?”

The community of Montgomery has been very welcoming, and we truly want to be a positive member of the community. We also want to make sure we spread the word as much as possible about this new centre as this project has been more than 10 years in the making. The Children’s Cottage Society has watched demand for their Crisis Nursery in Bridgeland grow beyond capacity. Calgary has doubled in size since we originally opened, and the need for a safe place for children when their families are in crisis continues to grow. Over the last few years, we have been turning away on average 1,900 children a year from our current fourteen-bed nursery in Bridgeland. The new facility, along with our existing nursery, will enable us to provide care for the children been turned away. We want children to embrace the new building and be a part of some fun as we get ready to open the doors next year.

Details of the contest can be found on the website and on social media www.childrenscottage.ab.ca

The Child and Family Centre will be a 35,000 square foot, three-storey building containing a new Crisis Nursery, a Family Resource Network, a Child Development Centre, and Counselling and Wellness programming. The total cost for the project is $25.4 million. To date CCS has raised $15.5 million. The Caring Together Campaign launched in June 2021, aims to raise the remaining $10 million over the next eighteen months.

Children’s Cottage Society is dedicated to building strong healthy children and safe nurturing families through prevention programs and support services. Since 1986, the Children’s Cottage Crisis Nursery has provided a 24/7 safe-haven where children can take a break from stressful situations and receive care while their parents get the help they need. We work with families to increase protective factors and decrease risk factors as a strategy to promote child development, effective and nurturing parenting, and to support and strengthen family functioning.
