The Children’s Cottage Society, established in Calgary in 1986, provides crisis nursery, community respite, and family support programs to more than 3,500 children a year. The Society’s mission is to “Build strong children and safe, nurturing families through prevention programs and support services” and our vision is “Resilient children blossom in healthy families.”
The Crisis Nursery provides 24-hour care for up to 3 nights for up to 20 children under the age of 9 when their families are in crisis and have no other alternatives for childcare help.
The Child Support Worker is responsible for day-to-day care and planning of activities according to the developmental needs of the children staying at the Crisis Nursery. They will interact with the parents daily by phone, and when Family Support is not available will complete admissions and discharges with the parents. This role ensures that files are completed, and data has been entered on the database.
WORK LOCATION:
Child and Family Centre – 1804 Home Road NW T3B 1H1
HOURS/WAGE:
- Full Time: 4 on/ 4 off shift rotation of 10-hour shifts. ($43,800 per year)
- Part Time: 4 on/ 4 off shift rotation of 5-hour shifts (4:00 pm – 9:00 pm or 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm). ($21,900 per year)
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Requirements:
- Diploma in the Human Service field from an accredited institution
- Two years experience working with children and their families. Experience with vulnerable populations preferred
- One year experience with providing care to newborns in a professional environment
- Must have an understanding of Trauma Informed Care
- First Aid (Level C)
- Completion of a Police Check WITH Vulnerable Sector Check and an Intervention Record Check.
- Must have the following trainings completed within the first 6 months of employment: Suicide Intervention, Self-Harm, Indigenous Awareness, DEI Training.
- Completion of Brain Story preferred
- Knowledge base in solution focused conversation, community resources, skills in crisis intervention and basic problem solving.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills (Benchmark level 5 required). Proficient use of computers including ability to document using a database.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Providing quality care for each child.
- Maintaining a safe environment.
- Assisting children in their daily routines keeping in mind the child’s developmental stage.
- Assisting children to cope with feelings of separation from parents.
- Interacting with parents.
- Taking crisis nursery calls, offering non-judgemental assistance to all families pursuing help from the Children’s Cottage.
- Interviewing parents upon arrival in an empathetic and supportive manner when family support workers are not available.
- Record keeping and data entry.
- Making file notes both written and on the computer.
- Overseeing and assisting childcare volunteers as they provide care for children.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

- Applicants must provide proof of qualifications prior to Job Offer. Education obtained from out of country must have documentation of equivalency.
- Must be legally able to work in Canada.
