Children’s Cottage Society is deeply saddened by the news of a newborn’s death earlier today in Longueuil, Quebec. Our hearts are with everyone affected: the first responders, health-care teams, and community members grieving this profound loss.
Every tragedy like this reminds us why compassion, awareness, and accessible resources are essential for parents in crisis. No one should ever feel alone or without options when facing the fear and desperation that can surround childbirth under difficult circumstances.
Through our partnership with Gems for Gems, Children’s Cottage Society is honoured to host Calgary’s first and only Hope’s Cradle.
This is a secure, anonymous, and compassionate option for a parent to safely surrender an infant. This program exists to protect infants and to offer dignity, safety, and the chance for life to both the baby and the parent in crisis.
This heartbreaking event reinforces the importance of ensuring safe surrender sites are known, accessible, and available in every community. Hope’s Cradle was installed at Children’s Cottage seamlessly, thanks to the support we received from Gems for Gems and our donors, Calgary first responders, and other key stakeholders who partnered with us to make it a reality. We recognize that news like this can stir deep sadness and reflection. If you or someone you know is experiencing distress or uncertainty during pregnancy or after birth, please reach out for help. In Calgary and area, parents can call 403-233-CARE (2273) to reach the Children’s Cottage Society’s 24/7 Link Line.
Our hearts remain with the people of Longueuil and everyone mourning this loss. Together, through empathy and action, we can ensure that no parent ever feels they have nowhere safe to turn.
